Last year we made a landscape of startups planning or rumoured to be going public in 2021/22. Out of 267, 193 of them did. But what of the others?
As the number of companies going public has fallen off a cliff in 2022, of the 74 that missed the window, 12 have subsequently been acquired, while others have seen big down rounds (Klarna) or even closure (Byton).
Those that did go public collectively lost 30% in value, with some now seemingly being targeted for take-privates (looking at you Darktrace and Babylon 👀).
There were fewer megarounds ($100M+) in Q2 than in any period since 2020, with the pace slowing further in Q3. And there have now been more acquisitions of VC-backed companies this year than in all of 2020. It's tough out there at late-stage right now, is consolidation season coming?
