Depop - Sustainability π€ Culture
This week Etsy acquired Italy-founded and London-HQ'd Depop for $1.625B. The fashion re-sale app that's shot to cultural ubiquity by tapping into trends of sustainability, hustle culture and self-branding.
The acquisition has been billed as a move to tap into Depop's Gen Z community, and highlights that Depop has become more than a marketplace - it is a shining example of a Community Moat in action. Depop CEO Maria Raga herself has said, βthey come to for the clothes, but stay for the culture.β
But it's the consumption consciousness at Depop's core that was their first differentiator. At a time when the fashion industry still accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions (World Bank), Depop are part of a community of sustainable fashion startups making Second Hand cool.
Next week! We'll be exploring corporates' role in startup ecosystems, corporate innovation and the rise of CVC.
With a data-fuelled intro from Dealroom Founder Yoram Wijngaarde, and a killer panel expertly moderated by Sifted Innovation Editor Maija Palmer, it's one not to miss.
