Edtech funding in H1 2022

In a new report powered by Dealroom data, Brighteye Ventures dives into the state of funding for global and European Edtech as of the first half of this year. Some key insights from the report:

• Following the massive venture capital investment intake by edtech startups in 2021, the global Edtech market has cooled in H1 2022.
• Edtech startups raised $6.5B globally in H1 2022, down -38% year on year, but still up 48% compared to H1 2020.
• In Europe, H1 2022 shows signs of resilience, with funding above levels seen in H1 2021. This resilience, combined with the broader slowdown in other markets, including the US, means that European Edtech VC now represents 22% of global Edtech VC, which is up from just 6% in 2020.
• Within European ecosystems, the UK remains the top hub by total of VC funding and number of deals. However, Edtech’s European ecosystem is continuing to broaden its funding landscape. The German market is looking increasingly stacked with 3 of the top 10 largest rounds in H1 2022 raised by German companies.
• Corporate learning is the most invested user vertical in edtech, followed by K-12 and higher education. Corporate learning startups raised a total of $723M.

🦄 🇺🇸 ClassDojo, a student and parent communication platform, quietly became an unicorn last September when it raised a previously-unannounced $125M Series D led by Tencent, valued at $1.25B.

🇨🇳 Dark Matter Intelligence, a startup developing cognitive AI assistants and educational platforms, raised a $73.9M Series B with participation from Guangzhou Industrial Investment Group, Guangzhou Industrial Holdings, Guangzhou Financial Holdings, and Nansha Kejin Holdings.

🇨🇦 ACTO, the omnichannel learning and enablement platform for life sciences, raised a $18M Series B. 

🇺🇸 Inflection Points, a startup building crypto-focused employment and corporate training solutions for corporates, has secured $12.6M in funding. Investors include Peter Thiel’s VC firm Thiel Capital, Fifth Down Capital, XYZ Fund, Rose Park Advisors, Blockchange and Third Prime. 

🇺🇸 APDS, a public-benefit company aiding incarcerated learners developing skills needed to succeed fter release, raised a $7M Series C with participation from ETS Strategic Capital, Juvo Ventures and Rethink Education.

🇪🇸 Twenix, a 1-to-1 English learning startup for companies and professionals, raised a $3.6M Series A led by Brighteye Ventures, with participation from JME Ventures and Inveready. 

🇬🇧 The Garden, a company co-founded by serial entrepreneur Sophie Adelman, who also co-founded Multiverse, and CTO  Simon Lambert, raised a $3.6M Seed round by Index Ventures and Village Global with participation from several angels.

🇵🇱 Female-led Warsaw-based Village Network raised a $3.5M Seed round. The startup offers edtech products, an application for running nurseries, preschools and schools, and a marketplace to find nurseries and preschools. 

🇮🇹 Educational gaming apps developer Marshmallow Games raised a $2.2M Seed round. Founded in 2014, the startup has developed over 20 apps. 

🇳🇱 Amsterdam-based Web 3.0 online academy JetLearn raised a $1.2M Seed round led by INSEAD Angel Group.

🇬🇧 GoHenry has acquired PixPay for an undisclosed amount.
