Global uptake in funding Carbon Capture

If the world stopped emitting Greenhouse Gasses (GHG) tomorrow, we would still need to remove tons of CO2e from the atmosphere to avoid catastrophic global warming. To keep the global temperature increase beneath 1.5ºC, we will need to stop emissions while removing ~10-20% of global emissions annually. 

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is one of the technologies with the potential to reduce the amount of carbon in our atmosphere, and in terms of VC investment, there's been a global uptake in funding for companies working with CCS.

In 2021, the global capacity of planned CCS projects grew 50% over 9 months, reaching 111M tonnes.  While the beginning of Q2 2022 has seen the biggest carbon removal startup deal ever with carbon capture company Climeworks raising $650M. Additionally, there is an advance market commitment (a pledge to guarantee a market) of $925M to advance carbon removal technology by companies that include Stripe, Alphabet, Shopify, Meta, and McKinsey.

🇩🇪 Hamburg-based climate startup 1Komma5 has concluded a Series A round with a funding of €200M. 

🇺🇸 Natural Fiber Welding, a Peoria, Illinois-based material innovation company, raised $85M in Series B funding. The round was led by Evolution VC Partners. 

🇺🇸 American startup Real, a mental health app, has raised $37M in an oversubscribed Series B. The round was led by Owl Ventures, with participation from former Cityblock CEO Iyah Romm. 

🇸🇪 Stockholm-based Material Exchange, a virtual marketplace designed to simplify the relationship between apparel brands and material suppliers, has raised €25M in a Series A round. 

🇺🇸  Solar Lifecycle Management Software Raptor Maps Raises $22M in a Series B. The funding round was led by MKB with a substantial contribution from the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund. 

Other promising impact deals:

🇺🇸 PassiveLogic, a Salt Lake City, Utah-based maker of an autonomous building platform, has secured $15M in Late VC. Brookfield Growth, the growth technology investment arm of Brookfield, provided the funding.

🇪🇸 Barcelona-based Heura, one of the fastest-growing plant-based companies in Europe, has smashed its crowdfunding target of €1M in just 30 minutes. Through its second Equity for Good Rebels crowdfunding campaign, Heura has gone on to raise more than €4M in 12 hours.

🇬🇧 Propelair, an Essex-based manufacturer of what is believed to be the world’s lowest water-flush toilet system, has secured an investment of £3.8M in Growth Equity VC. The investment was made by Earth Capital UK.

🇨🇳 China-based Haofood has secured $3.5M in seed capital for its peanut-based chicken alternative. Participants included Monde Nissin CEO Henry Soesanto.

🇩🇪 Multinational tech firm Bosch has acquired Five AI, a British automated driving company. The acquisition agreement was signed earlier this month, with the two firms agreeing not to reveal financial details.
