As Czech online supermarket Rohlik today announced a $119M round, it becomes Europe's 20th foodtech unicorn, and the fourth this year (after Wolt, Gorillas and Oda).
While Europe’s first big foodtechs were built in meal delivery, the foodtech battlegrounds are shifting. The market opportunity of groceries is more than triple that of restaurant dining. Online grocery adoption accelerated faster during the pandemic, and is still at less than 10% of sales in Europe, one of the most developed markets.
More has been raised in European groceries in 2021 (€1.7B) than all previous investment combined, as startups build war chests for customer and competitor acquisition (Getir's acquisition of BLOK announced only today).
Explore the landscape of rapidly converging and consolidating players, from full-stack online supermarkets, to personal shoppers, and instant cloud store deliveries, all muscling in on online groceries.
