Healthtech Q3 2022 report

Healthtech startup funding has continued to cool in Q3 2022. Healthtech funding in Q3 reached $12B, down 9% compared to Q2 2022 and down 34% vs. Q3 2021. Still, healthtech funding is not back to pre-pandemic levels yet.

The share of Early-stage rounds (smaller than $15M) increased from 10% to 21% YoY, while the share of rounds above $100M decreased from 55% to 33%.

Unicorns are rare again. Only 4 healthtech unicorns have been created in Q3 2022, a 73% drop from 15 in Q3 2021.

All healthtech segments are down from Q3 2021. Digital therapeutics is the only segment that hold on to Q2 2022 levels. This is mostly due to CureApp and Theranica rounds. Telemedicine and AI-drug development are still the top sectors for healthtech VC funding.

In other news:

🩸 Lab-grown blood given to people in world-first clinical trial. The ultimate goal is to manufacture vital, but ultra-rare, blood groups that are hard to get hold of.

These are necessary for people who depend on regular blood transfusions for conditions such as sickle cell anaemia.

If the blood is not a precise match then the body starts to reject it and the treatment fails. This level of tissue-matching goes beyond the well-known A, B, AB and O blood groups. - BBC

🏥📱 Amazon’s leaked ‘Clinic’ would connect patients to telemedicine. As the company prepares to shut down Amazon Care at the end of the year, a video describes a new healthcare offering described as “Amazon Clinic,” an online care program that would offer treatment for “common conditions” like allergies and acne.

As described in the video, people could fill out a questionnaire about their symptoms and pay a fee. A clinician would review their answers and provide a diagnosis and prescriptions as needed. - TheVerge

🇺🇸 Emalex Biosciences raised $250M in Series D to fund a Phase 3 clinical trial and potential commercialization of a new class of drug for patients with Tourette Syndrome.

🇬🇧 Osler Diagnostics raised £74M in Series C in advancing its breakthrough of its blood testing technology product through regulatory activities, and towards market launch.

🇮🇳 Clove Dental, Indian dental chain, raised $66M to achieve expansion, add latest technological equipment and to bring professionals to more Indian communities.

🇬🇧 Healios raised £14M to expand its digital health therapy for mental health  across the US via its subsidiary Meliora.

🇺🇸 Neurotrack, a company developing digital cognitive health tools, raised $10M to continue its development of a provider-based solution for those recognized to have cognitive decline, and help accelerate Neurotrack's push to go to market with health systems and providers across the U.S.
