When it comes to residential emissions, 50% to 70% of all energy used in homes goes towards heating and cooling. Cooling only accounts for more than 7% of global GHG emissions (more than shipping and aviation combined), and is expected to triple to 25% of emissions.
Beyond climate, cooling is a health concern. Thermal comfort is a human right, and particularly acute in developing countries where heat stress is already crippling - before factoring in future climate change impacts on temperatures.
Cooling tech is an overlooked sector of the energy transition, yet a key one. Cooling technologies could reduce electricity demand by ~30% by 2030 with associated emissions reductions of ~600 MtCO2.
