Marketplace Q1 Round Up

Large tech companies had an unpleasant Q1 to say the least with the Nasdaq-100 falling 9% since January, and private and public marketplaces have not been immune to the tech value hit.

Marketplace startups combined raised $22.8B in Q1 2022, a slowdown with a 34% decrease from Q4 2021 ($34.6B) and a 28% decrease from Q1 2021 ($31.5B). Total funding values are still comparable to the Health ($22.8B), transportation ($15.1B) and fintech ($30.8B). But marketplaces have fared worse than overall funding, total VC investments saw a decrease of 18% compared to Q4 2021 and an increase of 4% compared to Q1 2021. 

Company enterprise values have also been affected with a decrease in 7% compared to 2021, which had a reach of $6.6T. The adjustment is mainly due to public company value corrections as private markets must still be properly priced. Furthermore, only 18 new marketplace unicorns were created since January, less than half of 2021's rate of a quarterly average of 40 new unicorns.

🚗 Uber sets its eyes on a "Superapp". The US transportation marketplace has announced it plans on launching trains, rental cars and planes to its UK platform in 2022. The company will serve as a intermediary within these services as it takes one more step in becoming a all-round transportation platform. - CNBC

🍽 Canada's food industry goes to the metaverse. A national restaurant association has announced it plans on launching 365 Marketplace, a augmented reality environment to showcase events and vendors of the industry. - CDN

🇸🇬 SHEIN, the Singapore-based fashion marketplace, has reportedly raised $1B at a $100B valuation from investors Tiger Global, Sequoia and General Atlantic. The startup is now more valuable than Uber, AirBnB, Stripe and is on par with SpaceX. In 2021, SHEIN was the second most downloaded shopping app in the world, ahead of Alibaba, Amazon Shopping and AliExpress.

🇺🇸 Binance.US, the US-based cryptocurrency exchange marketplace, raised a $200M Seed round at a $4.5B valuation. The startup's 24h trading volume was just over $340M, compared to $17.6B of the global version of Binance but ahead of US competitors like FTX US with $225M traded over the last 24h.

🇲🇽 Jüsto, the Mexican grocery delivery platform, has raised a $152M Series B to further fund its expansion into Brazil and Peru. The startup has seen significant growth,  already counting on over 100,000 users in markets it operates and, for example, it grew 5x in the last 12 months in Mexico and has recently maintained over 30% month-over-month growth in São Paulo.

🇩🇪 Grover, the German-based tech rental marketplace, has raised $110M in equity and $220M in debt through its Series C at a $1B+ valuation. The startup focuses on enabling a circular economy with its devices and will use the funding to offer more devices and financial services to its 250,000+ customers.

🇩🇪 Avi Medical, the German telemedicine marketplace, has raised a $54M Series B to expand the number of clinics in its network.

🇪🇸 Civitatis, the Madrid-based marketplace for travel experiences, has raised $110M to fund its international expansion.

🇺🇸 Preply, the US-based tutoring marketplace, has raised $49M to expand its B2B offering. 

🇧🇷 Dolado, the Brazilian B2B marketplace for small businesses, has raised a $10M Series A to mainly grow its product and customer service teams.

🇸🇬🇯🇵 ACA Investments, Singapore-based private equity fund, has reportedly acquired BitFlyer, a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange marketplace for $370M.

🇦🇹 31300, the Austrian taxi company, has acquired local Uber-alternative Holmi for an undisclosed amount to consolidate operations in Austria.
