Mother's Day and Impact Startups

You might have noticed your Instagram and email flooded with advertisements for flowers and present ideas as Mother's Day approaches this Sunday. But, like most things, Mother's Day can be complex for many women. 

The road to motherhood, or not, is paved with challenges. From family planning and cycle tracking, to infertility and miscarriages, as many as 1 in 4 women experience a miscarriage, while an estimated 186 million people experience infertility globally.

A host of startups have been rising to counter these challenges (led by unicorns like Carrot Fertility and Progyny) with fertility benefits solutions aimed at providing equal access to quality care for all leading the growth. 

Companies working with fertility have increased in value by 38X since 2015 and are now worth an estimated $5.6B. With rates of assisted reproductive technology use increasing 5 - 10% year on year in USA and Europe, companies working in this space have great potential for growth.

🇰🇪 Sun King (Formally Greenlight Planet), a Kenya-based company providing distributed solar systems to households in Africa and Asia, raised $260M in Series D fundinging round led by BeyondNetZero, Catalyst, and Arch Emerging Markets Partners.

🇺🇸 Sense, a Cambridge, MA-based provider of a real-time home energy intelligence platform, raised $105M in Series C funding. The round was led by Blue Earth Capital.

🇺🇸 Oakland-based FreeWire Technologies has announced the closing of a $125M Series D round. The financing consists of a Senior Convertible Note provided exclusively by funds and accounts managed by BlackRock Financial.

🇸🇦 Red Sea Farms, a Saudi Arabia-based startup that uses salt water to grow produce while reducing carbon emissions, raised $18.5M in a Series C funding round led by Wa’ed and The Savola Group.

🇩🇪 Berlin-based femtech startup Apryl just raised $4.4M to scale its family-planning platform as a workplace perk. 

🇺🇸 Carbon Collective, a California-based online investment advisor focused on solving climate change, has secured $2.2M in Seed funding.

🇺🇸 Anuvia Plant Nutrients, a Florida-based provider of sustainable field-ready fertilisers for the agriculture, turf, and lawncare industries, raised $65.5M in Series D funding.

🇻🇳 Dat Bike, a Vietnam-based maker of electric motorbikes, secured $5.3M in Series A funding from Jungle Ventures and Wavemaker Partners.
