Q2 Marketplaces round up

Following the tech market crash, marketplaces have suffered more than VC market as a whole in relation to funding, mainly driven by decreases in large round values. EV has decreased even further but exits remain relatively stable.

Total marketplace funding in Q2 reached $19.8B, down 25% in relation to Q1 2022 and down 43% compared to Q2 2021. The funding drop is deeper than VC funding as a whole, which saw a 28% drop in both quarter on quarter and year over year for Q2. For marketplaces, Series C rounds and larger almost 35% of value since last quarter with megarounds over $250M losing over 50%, while lower stage rounds have remained stable. 

Enterprise value hasn’t gone unscaved for marketplaces, dropping 12% since Q1 and stands at $5.8T. 30% of that value is represented by the top 5 marketplaces (Amazon, Alibaba, Meituan, SHEIN and Booking.com). YTD the segment has created 29 unicorns, less than 40% of the rate of 2021.

While funding, EV  and value of exits have decreased, the number of exits in marketplaces has remained relatively stable with a 3% increase YoY and a 8% drop QoQ as assets have to adjust to high base interest rates in developed economies.

🇨🇳 Chinese tech firms pledge to ban NFTs, cryptocurrency marketplaces. Chinese internet and tech giants on Monday signed an initiative to ban cryptocurrency and digital collectibles (NFTs), along with a promise not to establish secondary marketplaces. - Business Standard

🇨🇳 WeDoctor, the Chinese health platform, has raised $149M in a Late VC round. The platform covers topics from doctor appointments to to insurance options. The latest round was led by a state-owned investment fund. 

🇺🇸 Opifex, the Texas-based heavy duty equipment rental platform, has raised $65M in a Growth Equity VC round. The company currently operates its own vehicles with over 1,500 pieces of equipment available.

🇺🇸 Mayvenn, the California-based hair stylist marketplace, has raised a $40M Series C to expand its partnership network within the US, the startup has an agreement with Walmart to set up lounges in different store locations. Currently, Mayvenn counts on over 50,000 stylists that not only make appointments, but operate online stores on the platform.

🇳🇴 Tise, the Norwegian second hand fashion marketplace, has raised $20M to strengthen its position in the Nordics and start expansion into new markets. 

🇬🇧 Distributed, the London-based tech recruitment platform, has raised $9M to expand its network of freelance developers.
