Hi there. There were at least 110 startups founded in Tokyo in 2020. That's five startups for every Japanese gold at the games so far. 🏅
Deep fakes, bias, revenge porn & online hate
From election-swaying astroturfing to trolling, racial abuse and child safeguarding, online platforms face a host of challenges to protect and support our online safety.
Thankfully there's a new generation of startups looking to close the safety gap, and use technology to solve some of the problems it has enabled. Our work-in-progress Safety Tech series in partnership with the Alfred Landecker Foundation aims to identify startups helping create a safer, more accessible and inclusive cyberspace.
So far over 1,200 founders, VCs and tech workers have submitted their ethnicity for use in aggregate data analysis (to soon be able to look at things like how startup funding or valuations vary by founder background). 🎉 We think 1,200 is a great start, but as always for robust and representative analysis, the bigger the dataset the better. So do please consider helping us close the diversity data gap by updating your profile and/or spreading the word 🙏
But in addition to data submitted for anonymous aggregate use, a further 32 founders opted-in for their startups to be discoverable based on founder ethnicity. And we're pleased that this discoverability is now live on Dealroom.
