Sneak peek at Healthtech Q3 2022

Following a record 2021, healthtech startup funding has continued to cool in Q3 2022. Investment is down by 65% year-on-year, in line with overall VC activity.

We’re putting together a full analysis covering how the sector is adapting to the market slowing down in our Healthtech Q3 2022 Report, but for the time being, we’ve gathered some key insights covering Healthtech’s Q3 performance.

Healthtech startups raised $11.8B globally in Q3 2022. This is down 9% from Q2 investment levels and 34% YoY.

Health has the crown back, for the first time since the beginning of 2021. Healthtech and Biotech, together, are the top industry for VC funding globally in Q3 2022. Still, Healthtech and Biotech startups received 35% less investment in Q3 compared to Q2 2022. 

Unicorns creation has slowed down, only 2 new healthtech unicorns created in Q3 2022, compared to 14 in the same period last year.

Telemedicine and AI-drug development are still the top sectors for healthtech VC funding. Although, investment has decreased severally compared to previous periods. Telemedicine slowed down 10% compared to Q2 2022, and decreased 76% YoY. Same for AI-drug development investment was down 64% compared to Q2 2022 and down 57% vs. Q3 2021.

🎗🎀 Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every October for the last four decades, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has helped to raise visibility of the most prevalent cancer on Earth — one that takes almost three-quarters of a million lives every year.

Startups are using AI to tackle this. Britain’s Kheiron Medical Technologies developed Mia, award-winning AI platform for breast screening. India’s Niramai is working on a low-cost tool that could help screen large numbers of women in rural and semi-urban areas.

🇨🇦 Prenuvo, a pioneer in advanced, radiation-free whole body imaging for early detection of cancer and other diseases, raised $70M in Series A and debt funding. 

🇧🇪 Orionis Biosciences, a life sciences company pioneering innovation of highly selective and tunable therapeutics for cancer, raised $55M.

🇨🇭 Anokion, a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on treating autoimmune disease by restoring normal immune tolerance, raised $35M. 

Other notable deals from around the globe:

 🇺🇸 Neuroflow, a provider of behavioural health integration software, raised $25M. The company’s platform allows providers to give patients behavioural health assessments that can detect a wide range of conditions, including anxiety and depression. 

🇩🇪 Anvajo, developer and manufacturer of point-of-care solutions for the diagnostic testing of liquids, raised €17.7M.
