The ClimateTech software landscape

ClimateTech is on the verge of doing the same thing to sustainability as fintech did to finance. European ClimateTech start-ups have raised a record of USD $11B in 2021, more than doubling year over year.

It's no surprise consumers and businesses are becoming increasingly interested to engage in sustainable practices in their daily lives, many do not know what their actual carbon footprint is and how to offset it. This is where ClimateTech software comes in.

With the help of tracking software and offsetting tech, carbon tracking & offsetting providers allow consumers and businesses to 1) gain an understanding of how carbon-intensive their transactions and lives are, and 2) help them compensate the generated emissions.

While social and regulatory pressure grows on businesses to become more sustainable, B2B transition software is in high demand as well. Organizations seek help to calculate their carbon emissions, reduce/offset those emissions, benchmark them against competitors, and receive guidance for regulatory reporting.

Additionally, financial startups are trying to avoid greenwashing their sustainable practices with more accurate methodologies and deeper insights to check on how they deliver on their claims, which can be gaged with the help of company data & rating and offsetting data & rating. A few data & rating startups include Impak Finance, Util, NetPurpose, YvesBlue and ABN AMRO Ventures ex-portfolio company OpenInvest, acquired by JP Morgan.

The largest this week:

🇬🇧 Wagestream raised a $175M Series C ($60M equity and $115M debt) in what it claims to be the largest “fintech-for-good” fundraise. Wagestream's social mission is “to reduce the poverty premium and improve financial well-being for frontline workers” and is backed by leading UK-based financial charities and Village Global, the social impact VC backed by the likes of Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates.

🇺🇸 Stablecoin issuer Circle raised a $400M growth equity round from BlackRock, Fidelity Management, Marshall Wace LLP and Fin Capital. Circle is the issuer of USD Coin (USDC), one of the fastest-growing dollar digital currencies powering always-on internet-native commerce and payments.

🇮🇳 Indian crypto exchange CoinDCX just raised over $135M in Series D funding at a $2.15B valuation. The startup’s new funding comes just weeks after the new India's crypto taxation rule which include 30% tax on the income and 1% tax deduction at source for each trading. 

🇸🇬 Coda Payments has raised $690M in growth equity to enable cross-border payments for games and other digital products, as well as alternative app stores. Alternative stores are becoming more intriguing to game companies thanks to a ruling by a federal judge in the Epic Games vs. Apple antitrust lawsuit.

🇳🇱 Payments startup Payaut raised €8M from Entrée Capital, LocalGlobe and  Gradient Ventures to fuel its European expansion. Payaut offers any online marketplace a PSP agnostic solution that enables the platform to be compliant with EU regulations.

🇿🇲 Zambian card-issuing startup Union54 raises $12M led by Tiger Global. Union54 hopes to create a homegrown alternative to Mastercard or Visa. 

🇦🇹 Crypto startup Coinpanion has increased its seed round from €1.8M to €5.5M. The company accompanies the customer through the entire process from single market entry to the ongoing optimization of crypto investments and automated tax reporting.

Tip of the week

This year, 39 new fintech unicorns were minted, bringing the total number to 468. The pace of unicorn creation has slowed from last year, when 193 fintech unicorns were minted, more than 16 each month.
