The battle against climate change will be won or lost in how we manage emissions from our cities. Policies worldwide are being set to accelerate the transition to more sustainable cities with a focus on sustainable building, green mobility, and clean energy generation. Smart city startups have caught the attention of investors too. Companies and investors are developing and financing technology for cities to tap into climate transitioning.
Key findings:
Urban tech startups have raised $28B in 2022 year to date, already more than in 2020, but projected to fall short of last year by 23%.
Corporate investment in Urban Tech has pulled back almost 50% in 2022, going back to 2019 levels.
19 new unicorns were created this year. There are 109 sustainable urban tech unicorns globally.
Energy efficiency (heating, cooling and building management) and sustainable construction (modular construction, concrete, steel and other materials startups) are all underfunded.
Today, CEE is ranked among the highest in Europe for jobs created per euro of venture capital invested. The experience in scaling efficiently can be an advantage in aiming to minimize the effects of a market downturn. CEE has also made a name for itself as a pioneering region for enterprise software and gaming companies. As the startup ecosystem matures, CEE is now home to promising startups in many other segments including disruptive technologies such as Web3 and Crypto.
