👶 Smart Pacifier Monitors Electrolyte Levels. At Washington State University, a team developed a smart pacifier that can provide continuous monitoring of electrolyte levels in saliva. The measurements could help to avoid twice daily blood draws for premature infants. Blood draws are currently routine practice for premature infants to monitor for signs of dehydration. - Medgadget

Premature infants are incredibly delicate and require a lot of care. Therefore, making this care as non-invasive as possible is desirable.

🦾 Artificial Skin Senses Pressure, Temperature, Humidity. Researchers at Graz University in Austria have created an artificial skin that is more sensitive than your fingertip. The skin contains 2,000 sensors per square millimeter, and the researchers designed it to sense humidity, temperature, and pressure, just like human skin. - Medgadget

🥵 Blood oxygen tools don’t work as well for patients who aren’t white. Compared to white patients, pulse oximetry overestimated blood oxygen levels by 1.2% for Black patients, 1.1% among non-Black Hispanic patients, and 1.7% for Asian patients. - Futurity 

🦠 ​​Under-five COVID-19 vaccines near finish line. An FDA committee will meet in mid-June to review data on COVID-19 vaccines for children six months through five years old. Pfizer said today that a third dose improves efficacy for that age group. - The Verge

🇺🇸 Ultima Genomics, gene sequencing startup, raised $600M to lower genome sequencing costs. Ultima claims it can sequence an entire genome for just $100, which is an affordability advancement that could significantly accelerate genomic research. 

🇺🇸 Health insurer, Friday Health Plans, raised $70M of equity funding and $50M in debt. 

🇫🇷 Ouihelp, an elderly-home help solution based on a matching algorithm, raised €30M in Series B. The startup has deployed a matching algorithm allowing families to find the most suitable carer for the person, as well as tools for monitoring interventions and automating tasks.

Other notable deals from around the globe:

🇸🇪 CapiTainer, home blood sampling, raised $3.5M in Seed. The funds will be used to support the development of its new qDBS dried blood spot testing system. Capitainer has now firmly established that the home sampling system works for clinical use, with an impressive success rate with first time users.

🇪🇬 Esaal, hub for online health and wellness consultations in the MENA Region, raised $1.7M in Seed to expand operations further.
