Top 100 food delivery startups to watch

We’ve ranked the top food delivery startups globally to watch based on Dealroom Signal.

Following a record adoption (and VC investment) of food and grocery delivery services in the past 2 years, as economies reopened, many of the companies in the category have been struggling to turn a profit and deliver for investors.

Since 2017, 43% of VC investment went to food delivery companies, and more than half of the foodtech unicorns are in food delivery. Europe counts 35 companies in the list, followed by the United States (25) and Asia (18).

Don't think of this as a ranking the “best startups” in food delivery, but instead as the top startups to watch based on their fundraising timeline, growth indicators, founding team, and a number of other factors.

📉 Instacart cuts valuation again, to $13B. Instacart previously cut its valuation by nearly 40% to $24b in March and then to $15b in July, according to Barron’s. This third cut precedes Instacart’s plans to go public and comes at a time when tech companies are grappling with a challenging economic landscape. - GroceryDive

🦍 Who owns the biggest stake in Gorillas and what does a sale mean? Embattled speedy grocery unicorn Gorillas could be acquired by Turkish competitor Getir, at a valuation much lower than the $2.1b price tag investors gave it last year. With the deal set to value Gorillas at significantly less than previous rounds, Sifted looks at who stands to lose the most. - Sifted

🇺🇸 Stellar Pizza, a California-based robotic pizza restaurant, raised $16.5m led by Jay-Z's venture capital firm Marcy Venture Partners. The automated pizza truck is designed by formed SpaceX engineers. 

🇺🇸 Xiao Chi Jie (XCJ), a Washington-based direct-to-consumer brand for Chinese food, raised $10m in Series A funding. What started as a restaurant in 2018, evolved into a digital brand during lockdowns. The company had to pivot to online deliveries of frozen dumplings. As the demand grew, the company started to ship nationwide and increased the items on their delivery menu.
