Support act to headliners: event tech marketplaces

With the World Cup underway, it serves as a reminder of the role of marketplaces in event tech, including:

• Ticket marketplaces (Live Nation, DICE and SeatGeek)
• Venue marketplaces (Event Inc., VenueE and PeerSpace)
• Planning, financing and execution marketplaces (HoneyBook, Maroo and Platerrz)

Event tech is still a small segment within marketplaces, with event marketplace startups worth a combined $25.4B. This value has doubled since 2017, but is still less than 1% of total marketplace value. Similarly, VC funding at $770M so far this year, is marginally above 1% of total marketplace funding. 

But events are still big business, and their changing nature (physical to virtual to hybrid), makes them an area of opportunity.

Looking forward, investment in event tech is expected to go specialized and to go interactive, from attendees connection and live assertive panel recommendations, to live streaming, financial needs, and even niche needs like endurance events (Let’s do This).

In other news: 

🦃 Amazon records biggest Thanksgiving in history. The company noted that small businesses made over $1B in sales over the weekend on its platform. This was the day of the highest volume of goods sold online in US history. The news comes as Amazon raised more than $8B with bonds before new announcements from the Fed. 

🛍️ Lyst, UK-based fashion marketplace lays off quarter of staff. The startup is another one to feel pressure in e-commerce. It isn't alone, larger competitors such as Farfetch have also been looking at employee cuts and large valuation drops. 

🇪🇸 Cooltra, the Barcelona-based two-wheeled mobility platform, has raised $25M to push a fleet expansion and electrification. The startup operates 19,000 vehicles across major cities in Europe. 

🇺🇸 Pearpop, a social marketplace that links influencers to brands, has raised a $18M Series A at a $300M valuation. The US company has almost 200,000 creators on its platform and will use the funds to boost sales partnerships and hiring. 

Other promising marketplace deals:

🇪🇸 GoTrendier, a Barcelona-based second-hand fashion marketplace, has raised a $13M round to strengthen its presence in Mexico and Colombia.

🇮🇳 Health product D2C marketplace, Healthkart, has raised $65M Series H. 

🇩🇰 Danish real estate marketplace Estaldo raised a $13M round to push through a market with high interest rates and declining sales.
