Gee Wiz

Alphabet's $32B acquisition of Wiz is one that will go down in history as one of the biggest of all time. In fact it is the biggest first time acquisition of a VC-backed startups (i.e. not an acquisition post-IPO of a secondary acquisition).

The exit comes after Wiz boldly turned down $23B from Google just last year.

The biggest winner of the deal was Index Ventures. Index backed Wiz from Seed onwards, participated in every round, and emerged as its largest outside shareholder with a 13% stake (outpacing Sequoia's 10% and Insight's 8%, according to Bloomberg).

Worth listening back to Shardul Shah's recent chat with Harry Stebbings, which explains the power law in action: "Every investment in Wiz has been at a very high price. I don't know why we're talking about averages—none of us are in the business of mean reversion. I'm not seeking average returns. I'm not seeking good deals—I'm looking for outliers."
